- Employee contributes 0.75% of gross wages; employer contributes 3.25% — both go toward medical and cash benefits.
- ESI is mandatory for establishments with 10+ employees (20+ in some states) once any employee falls under the wage limit.
- Once covered, an employee usually remains covered for the rest of that contribution period even if wages rise mid-period.

How this calculator works
ESI applies to employees earning up to ₹21,000 gross per month. The employee contributes 0.75% and the employer contributes 3.25% of gross wages toward medical and cash benefits.
ESI Calculator formula
Employee ESI = 0.75% of gross wages. Employer ESI = 3.25% of gross wages. Applies when gross wages are ₹21,000 a month or less.
Worked example
Anita's gross monthly wages are ₹18,000.
- Gross wages ₹18,000 ≤ ₹21,000, so ESI applies.
- Employee ESI = 0.75% × ₹18,000 = ₹135
- Employer ESI = 3.25% × ₹18,000 = ₹585
₹720 a month is paid to ESIC — ₹135 deducted from Anita's salary and ₹585 paid by the employer.
