Good to know
- Working days = calendar days − weekly offs − holidays that fall on a working day. A holiday on a weekly off is counted once, as a weekly off.
- Government holiday lists bind government offices. A private business follows its own holiday list under the state Shops and Establishments Act or Factories rules, so pick the list closest to yours and add any extra company holidays.
- Festival dates that depend on the moon (Id, Muharram, Milad-un-Nabi) can move by a day. Check your state’s latest order before you close payroll.
- Sleet holds state lists for 2026 and the Central Government list for 2026 and 2027. For other years the tool counts weekly offs only and tells you so.
Estimate only. Holiday dates come from Sleet's lists of government notifications, which states can change during the year. Confirm your own holiday list and weekly-off rules before using the count for payroll or leave.
How it works
What this tool does.
Find the number of working days in a month or a date range in India. Pick your state holiday list, your weekly-off pattern and any company holidays, and see every date left out and why.
Choose a month or a date range, then pick a holiday list: a state list for 2026 or the Central Government (DoPT) list for 2026 and 2027. Choose your weekly-off pattern (Sunday only, Saturday and Sunday, 2nd and 4th Saturday, 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturday, or your own days) and add any company holidays. The calculator takes out weekly offs first, then holidays that fall on a working day, so a holiday on a Sunday is not counted twice. It lists every date left out with the reason and gives a month-by-month breakdown. If Sleet has no holiday list for a year in your range, it says so and counts weekly offs only.

Working Days Calculator formula
Working days = Calendar days − Weekly offs − Holidays that fall on a working day
Worked example
A Maharashtra business with Sunday as the weekly off wants the working days in November 2026, using the Maharashtra 2026 holiday list.
- Calendar days in November 2026 = 30
- Sundays (1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 November) = 5 weekly offs
- Diwali / Laxmi Pujan falls on Sunday 8 November, so it is already counted as a weekly off
- Holidays on working days: Bali Pratipada (10 Nov), Bhaubeej (11 Nov) and Guru Nanak Jayanti (24 Nov) = 3
- Working days = 30 − 5 − 3 = 22
November 2026 has 22 working days for this business.

Does Indian law fix the number of working days in a month?
No. Section 13(1)(b) of the Code on Wages, 2019 lets the government provide a day of rest in every period of seven days, but the weekly-off pattern and holiday list come from your state rules and your own policy. That is why the count changes with the weekly off you choose.
Which holiday lists does the calculator use?
It uses Sleet’s holiday lists: each state’s 2026 list, and the Central Government list for offices in Delhi and New Delhi issued by DoPT for 2026 and 2027. It never guesses holidays for any other year. For those dates it counts weekly offs only and tells you, so you can add your own holidays.
What happens when a holiday falls on a weekly off?
The day is counted once, as a weekly off, and shown in the list with the holiday name. Whether staff get another day off in its place depends on your company policy.
Should I include restricted holidays?
Usually not all of them. In the DoPT list, each Central Government employee may take any two restricted holidays in the year. Turn on the toggle only if your office closes on every one of them; otherwise add the few your office observes as your own holidays.
Can I use this count to work out loss of pay?
Yes. If your salary policy divides monthly pay by the actual working days in the month, use this count as the divisor. The LOP Calculator does this for you and compares it with the calendar-day, 30-day and 26-day methods.
