What is Assessment Year (AY)?
In Indian tax law under the Income Tax Act, 1961, the Assessment Year (AY) is the financial year that comes immediately after the Previous Year (PY) or Financial Year (FY). The income earned between April 1 and March 31 of an FY is evaluated and taxed in the corresponding AY.
For example, income earned in FY 2024-25 is assessed and filed in AY 2025-26. From 1 April 2026 the Income-tax Act, 2025 replaces 'previous year' and 'assessment year' with a single 'tax year', the financial year in which the income is earned.
