LPA Salary Explained: How to Convert a CTC Package to Monthly In-Hand Pay
LPA means lakhs per annum, so 12 LPA is ₹12,00,000 a year. Monthly in-hand pay is well below one-twelfth of that, because CTC includes variable pay, employer PF, gratuity and insurance you do not receive monthly, and your own PF, professional tax and income tax come out as well. The worked example below lands near ₹78,000 a month.

LPA stands for lakhs per annum, the way most Indian job offers state yearly pay. A 12 LPA package means ₹12,00,000 a year. The monthly in-hand salary is never simply that figure divided by twelve, because CTC includes items that are not paid monthly. To run your own numbers, use the CTC to in-hand calculator.

Start with what CTC contains
CTC is the full yearly cost of employing you. It typically has fixed pay (basic, HRA, allowances), employer PF, gratuity, insurance and variable pay. Fixed pay is monthly, variable pay is paid later and only if targets are met.

A step-by-step estimate
- ✓Step 1, remove variable pay: If 10 percent of the 12 LPA is variable, ₹1,20,000 is not part of the monthly salary.
- ✓Step 2, remove employer-side items: Employer PF, gratuity and insurance premiums are part of CTC but not part of your monthly credit.
- ✓Step 3, remove employee deductions: Your own PF, professional tax and income tax.
- ✓Step 4, divide by twelve: What is left is your monthly in-hand estimate.
An example
Take a 12 LPA offer with ₹1.2 lakh of variable pay. Employer PF at the ₹3,000 a month ceiling (₹36,000 a year, using the ₹25,000 wage ceiling in force since 17 September 2026) and gratuity of about ₹23,000 together take roughly ₹59,000 out of CTC, which leaves about ₹10.21 lakh of fixed pay. Employee PF at the same ceiling is ₹36,000, professional tax is about ₹2,400, and income tax under the new regime comes to roughly ₹36,000 after the standard deduction. That leaves about ₹9.37 lakh a year, or roughly ₹78,000 a month. Your own figures will differ with your structure, regime and PF method.

Why two people at the same LPA take home different amounts
- ✓Choice of tax regime changes the tax bill.
- ✓A larger basic means larger PF deductions.
- ✓Variable pay may be paid quarterly or yearly.
- ✓Some companies include joining bonus or insurance premium in CTC and some do not.
Questions to ask before accepting an offer
- ✓How much of the CTC is fixed and how much variable?
- ✓Is employer PF calculated on the full basic or on the ₹25,000 ceiling?
- ✓Is there a notice-period or bond clause attached to any bonus?
- ✓Can you see the full break-up in writing?
Compare offers on monthly fixed pay and benefits, not only on the headline LPA.
Employers can reduce confusion by sharing a clear salary break-up with every offer letter and by letting candidates run their own numbers on a calculator before they join.
