    How it works

    What this tool does.

Create a GST credit note or debit note with the original invoice number and date, the reason under section 34, a 16-character serial number and the CGST/SGST or IGST split. Checks the rule 53(1A) details and the credit note time limit, then downloads as a PDF.

Pick Credit note or Debit note, choose the reason, and say whether your buyer is registered. Then type straight onto the note: your details, the buyer, the original invoice number and date, and the items with quantity and rate. Choose CGST + SGST or IGST and the rate. Below the note, the tool checks every detail rule 53(1A) of the CGST Rules asks for and, for a credit note, works out the last date to declare it under section 34(2). Use Download PDF to save it. Your own business details stay in this browser only.

Credit Note & Debit Note Generator formula

Credit note limit (section 34(2)): declare it in the return for the month you issue it, and no later than 30 November after the end of the financial year of the original supply, or the date you file that year’s annual return, whichever is earlier. GST on the note = taxable value × rate, split equally into CGST and SGST within a state, or charged as IGST between states.

    Worked example

A Pune distributor sold goods worth ₹40,000 + 18% GST on invoice INV/25-26/0142 dated 12 February 2026. On 20 October 2026 the buyer, also in Maharashtra, returns goods worth ₹10,000.

    1. Reason: goods returned by the recipient, one of the cases in section 34(1)
    2. Taxable value on the credit note: ₹10,000
    3. CGST 9% = ₹900 and SGST 9% = ₹900, so the total credit is ₹11,800
    4. The original invoice date, 12 February 2026, falls in financial year 2025-26
    5. Section 34(2) outer date: 30 November 2026, or the 2025-26 annual return date if that is earlier
    6. The credit note dated 20 October 2026 is within the limit

Issue credit note CN/26-27/0007 for ₹11,800 against INV/25-26/0142, and declare it in the return for October 2026.

When can I issue a GST credit note?

Section 34(1) of the CGST Act allows a credit note when the taxable value or tax on the invoice was more than what was payable, when the buyer returns goods, or when goods or services are found deficient. One credit note can cover several invoices of the same financial year.

What is the time limit for a credit note in GST?

Under section 34(2), declare it in the return for the month you issue it, but not later than 30 November after the end of the financial year of the supply, or the date you file the annual return for that year, whichever is earlier. The 30 November date applies from 1 October 2022 (Finance Act, 2022).

What details must a GST credit note or debit note show?

Rule 53(1A) of the CGST Rules lists them: your name, address and GSTIN; the nature of the document; a serial number of up to 16 characters, unique for the financial year; the date; the buyer’s name, address and GSTIN (or, for an unregistered buyer, the delivery address and State name and code); the original invoice number and date; the taxable value, rate and tax credited or debited; and your signature.

When do I issue a debit note instead?

Section 34(3) asks for a debit note when the taxable value or tax on the invoice was less than what was payable, for example a price increase or GST charged at a lower rate by mistake. Section 34(4) asks you to declare it in the return for the month you issue it. A debit note includes a supplementary invoice.

Does the buyer have to reverse input tax credit for my credit note?

From 1 October 2025, the proviso to section 34(2) says you cannot reduce your output tax for a credit note if a registered buyer claimed input tax credit on it and has not reversed it. For other buyers, the condition is that the tax has not been passed on to anyone else.

Can I issue a credit note for a discount given after the sale?

Under CBIC Circular 92/11/2019-GST you can issue a financial (commercial) credit note for a discount, but it does not reduce your GST unless section 15(3)(b) is met. A Finance Act, 2026 change that adds such discounts to section 34(1) is shown by CBIC as not yet in force, so check with your CA.
