Sales Forecasting: A Beginner's Guide

A beginner-friendly guide to building a sales forecast that reflects real pipeline data instead of optimistic guesswork.

5 min read

A sales forecast is only as good as the pipeline data feeding it. A forecast built on gut-feel estimates from reps is usually optimistic by a wide margin — a weighted forecast based on actual deal stage and history is far more reliable.

The weighted pipeline method

  • ✓Assign a win probability per stage: For example, Qualified = 20%, Proposal Sent = 50%, Negotiation = 80%.
  • ✓Multiply deal value by probability: A ₹5 lakh deal in Negotiation contributes ₹4 lakh to the weighted forecast.
  • ✓Sum across all open deals: The total gives a realistic, probability-adjusted forecast rather than a best-case total.

The most reliable input for stage-by-stage win probabilities isn't a rule of thumb — it's your own historical conversion data from each stage, which usually differs meaningfully from generic industry benchmarks.

Reviewing forecast accuracy

At the end of each sales cycle, compare your forecasted number against what actually closed, and adjust your stage probabilities accordingly. A forecast that's consistently off in the same direction is telling you your stage weights need recalibrating, not that your reps got worse at selling.
