Part 1 · How long is the e-way bill valid?

1

When was it generated?

2

Distance and cargo

Type of cargo

Multimodal shipment with at least one leg by ship

The rule gives these the same 20 km per day as over dimensional cargo.

Result

Enter the generation date and a distance above 0 km to see the validity.

Good to know

  • Validity starts when Part B is first filled (vehicle number, or the transport document for rail, air or ship). Later Part B updates do not restart it.
  • Extension is for exceptional cases such as a breakdown, accident, natural calamity, law and order problems or trans-shipment delay. The new validity is worked out on the distance still to go.
  • The portal allows extensions only up to 360 days from the date the e-way bill was first generated (from 1 January 2025).
  • An e-way bill can be cancelled within 24 hours of generation, unless it has already been verified in transit.
  • Times are Indian Standard Time. The "valid now" line uses your device clock.

Part 2 · Do you need an e-way bill?

1

The movement

Where are the goods going?
2

Exemptions

· Rule 138(14)

Result

Yes, an e-way bill is needed

₹75,000 is more than ₹50,000, the limit in Rule 138(1). Generate it before the goods start moving.

Inter-state limitAbove ₹50,000
Within one stateSet by each state
Your consignment value₹75,000

Good to know

  • Exactly ₹50,000 does not need an e-way bill for inter-state movement. The rule applies only above ₹50,000.
  • Below the limit you can still generate one voluntarily, which some buyers and transporters prefer.
  • If the goods move up to 50 km within the state between your place of business and the transporter (or from the transporter to the buyer), Part B (vehicle details) can be left out.
  • Part A on its own is valid for 15 days for filling Part B.

Based on Rule 138 and Rule 138F of the CGST Rules, 2017 as published by CBIC, Notifications 94/2020-CT and 31/2019-CT, and the e-way bill portal FAQs and advisories, checked October 2026. Intra-state limits are not built in because each state sets its own. Confirm special cases with your chartered accountant.

How it works

What this tool does.

Work out e-way bill validity from the distance under Rule 138(10): one day per 200 km, or per 20 km for over dimensional cargo. Get the exact expiry, the extension window and a check against the ₹50,000 limit and exemptions.

Enter the date and time the e-way bill was generated (when Part B was first filled), the distance shown on the e-way bill and the type of cargo. The calculator applies the Rule 138(10) table: one day for the first 200 km and one more day for every 200 km or part of it after that, or 20 km per day for over dimensional cargo and multimodal shipments with a leg by ship. Each day ends at midnight, so it shows the expiry date and time and the window in which the transporter can extend it. The second part checks whether an e-way bill is needed: the ₹50,000 limit for inter-state movement, the cases that need one at any value, and the exemptions in Rule 138(14).

E-Way Bill Validity Calculator formula

Validity in days = distance ÷ 200 km, rounded up (normal cargo), or distance ÷ 20 km, rounded up (over dimensional cargo, or a multimodal shipment with at least one leg by ship). Day 1 ends at midnight at the end of the day after generation; each further day ends at the next midnight. Expiry = 11:59 PM on (generation date + validity days). The portal allows extension from 8 hours before to 8 hours after expiry.

Worked example

A Pune manufacturer sends goods worth ₹1,80,000 including GST to a buyer in Bengaluru. The e-way bill shows 840 km and is generated on 10 October 2026 at 3:15 PM, with a normal truck.

  1. Inter-state and ₹1,80,000 is more than ₹50,000, so an e-way bill is needed
  2. Normal cargo: one day for every 200 km or part of it
  3. First 200 km: 1 day. Remaining 640 km ÷ 200 = 3.2, rounded up to 4 more days
  4. Total validity: 1 + 4 = 5 days
  5. Day 1 ends at midnight at the end of 11 October; day 5 ends at midnight at the end of 15 October
  6. Extension window: 4:00 PM on 15 October to 8:00 AM on 16 October

The e-way bill is valid until 11:59 PM on 15 October 2026. If the truck is delayed for a genuine reason, the transporter can extend it between 4:00 PM on 15 October and 8:00 AM on 16 October.

What is the e-way bill validity for 200 km?

One day. Under Rule 138(10) of the CGST Rules, as amended by Notification 94/2020-CT from 1 January 2021, an e-way bill for normal cargo is valid for one day up to 200 km and one more day for every 200 km or part of it after that. So 201 km gets 2 days and 450 km gets 3 days.

At what time does an e-way bill expire?

At midnight. Rule 138(10) says each day ends at midnight of the day after the date of generation. The e-way bill portal FAQ gives the example that a bill generated at 00:04 or at 23:58 on 14 March has its first day end at midnight between 15 and 16 March. The time of generation does not change the expiry.

Can I extend the validity of an e-way bill?

Yes, if the goods cannot reach in time for an exceptional reason such as an accident, breakdown, natural calamity or trans-shipment. The transporter carrying the goods updates Part B and gives the reason. The portal allows this from 8 hours before to 8 hours after expiry, and only up to 360 days from the original generation date (from 1 January 2025). The new validity is based on the distance still to go.

What is the e-way bill limit?

For inter-state movement, an e-way bill is needed when the consignment value is more than ₹50,000 (Rule 138(1)). The value includes CGST, SGST, IGST and cess on the invoice. Inter-state job work sent by a principal, and handicraft goods moved by a person exempt from registration, need one at any value. For movement within a state, each state sets its own limit.

What is the validity for over dimensional cargo or a shipment by ship?

One day for every 20 km or part of it. Rule 138(10) gives the 20 km slab to over dimensional cargo (a single indivisible load larger than the limits in rule 93 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989) and to multimodal shipments with at least one leg by ship (Notification 31/2019-CT).

Which goods do not need an e-way bill?

Rule 138(14) exempts, among others: goods in its Annexure (household LPG, PDS kerosene, postal baggage, currency, used personal and household effects, precious stones and metals, jewellery other than imitation jewellery, coral), non-motorised transport, alcoholic liquor, petroleum crude, diesel, petrol, natural gas and ATF, empty cargo containers, and goods moved under customs bond or seal.
