Job work return deadline

Enter the challan date to see the return deadline.

Rule 45(3): report goods sent to and received from job workers in FORM GST ITC-04 by the 25th of the month after the period. The period is each half-year (April to September, October to March) if your turnover in the last financial year was over ₹5 crore, and the whole financial year otherwise.

Do you need an e-way bill?

  1. Rule 55(3): goods moved on a delivery challan must be declared as rule 138 requires, that is, on an e-way bill when one applies.
  2. Rule 138(1): an e-way bill is needed when the consignment value is more than ₹50,000. The value includes any GST shown on the challan.
  3. Value on this challan: ₹0.00.

₹0.00 is not more than ₹50,000, so the rule 138(1) limit is not crossed.

For movement within your state, confirm the limit and any exemptions under your state's GST rules with your CA.

Rule 55 check

The details a delivery challan must carry, checked against what you have typed.

Checking the details…

Copies: rule 55(2) asks for the challan in triplicate when goods move for supply, marked Original for consignee, Duplicate for transporter and Triplicate for consigner. Download PDF prints all three, one per page.

    How it works

    What this tool does.

Create a GST delivery challan under rule 55 of the CGST Rules: pick the purpose, add HSN, quantity and value, and print the Original, Duplicate and Triplicate copies as one PDF. Job work mode shows the section 143 return deadline.

Choose why the goods are moving (job work, liquid gas, supply on approval, line sales, own branch, exhibition, repair, goods sent in parts or another reason) and whether they stay in your state. Then type straight onto the challan: your details, the consignee, and each item with HSN, quantity and rate. Turn on GST or IGST when the goods move for supply. Below the challan the tool checks every detail rule 55 asks for, tells you whether the ₹50,000 e-way bill limit in rule 138 is crossed, and in job work mode works out the return deadline from section 143. Download PDF prints all three copies, one per page.

    Delivery Challan Generator formula

Job work return deadline (section 143(1)): inputs within one year and capital goods within three years of the date sent out; the Commissioner can extend this by up to one and two more years. Moulds and dies, jigs and fixtures, and tools have no limit. E-way bill check (rule 138(1)): consignment value, including GST shown, more than ₹50,000; for job work in another state, needed whatever the value.

    Worked example

A Rajkot manufacturer sends 500 kg of steel rods (HSN 7214) worth ₹62,000 to a registered job worker in Pune, Maharashtra, for machining, on a challan dated 5 October 2026.

    1. Purpose: job work, rule 55(1)(b). No tax is charged because the goods are not sold
    2. Goods sent are inputs, so section 143(1)(a) gives one year to bring them back
    3. One year from 5 October 2026: get the rods (or the finished parts) back before 5 October 2027
    4. If needed, the Commissioner can extend this by up to one more year, to 5 October 2028
    5. The job worker is in another state, so an e-way bill is needed whatever the value (proviso to rule 138(1)); the place of supply goes on the challan
    6. Print three copies: Original for consignee, Duplicate for transporter, Triplicate for consigner

Challan DC/26-27/0031 goes with the goods. If the rods are not back before 5 October 2027 (or the extended date), they are treated as supplied to the job worker on 5 October 2026 and GST is payable with interest.

When can goods move on a delivery challan instead of an invoice?

Rule 55(1) of the CGST Rules allows it for liquid gas where the quantity is not known at removal, for job work, for movement that is not a supply (such as to your own godown under the same GSTIN, an exhibition or repair), and for other supplies the Board notifies. CBIC Circular 10/10/2017-GST also allows it for goods sent on approval, with the invoice issued on delivery.

What details must a delivery challan show?

Under rule 55(1): date and number (up to 16 characters), consigner name, address and GSTIN, consignee name, address and GSTIN if registered, HSN code and description, quantity (provisional if not known), taxable value, tax rate and amount when the goods move for supply, place of supply for movement to another state, and signature.

How many copies of a delivery challan are needed?

Rule 55(2) asks for three copies when goods move for supply: Original for consignee, Duplicate for transporter and Triplicate for consigner. This tool prints all three, one per page.

What is the time limit to get goods back from a job worker?

Section 143(1) of the CGST Act gives one year for inputs and three years for capital goods from the day they are sent out. The Commissioner can extend this by up to one and two more years on sufficient cause. If they are not back in time, they are treated as supplied to the job worker on the day they were sent out.

Do I need an e-way bill with a delivery challan?

Rule 55(3) says goods moved on a challan must be declared under rule 138. Rule 138(1) needs an e-way bill when the consignment value is more than ₹50,000, and for job work in another state it is needed whatever the value. For movement within your state, confirm your state’s limit with your CA.

How do I report job work challans?

Rule 45(3) asks you to report goods sent to and received from job workers in FORM GST ITC-04 by the 25th of the month after the period. The period is each half-year if your turnover in the last financial year was over ₹5 crore, and the whole financial year otherwise.
